Typing is something we do every day. It's probably true that most of the words we write whether on social media or through Email and text are input with our thumbs on our cell phones but there are lots of occasions in which we type messages to each other on our computers, so typing is a skill everyone should master. If you work in an office, you'll need to type because reporting and administration are part of every job in an office.

Average Words Per Minute

The maximum at which anyone can hand write a note is estimated to be around 30 words per minute (WPM) but how long could anyone keep up legible writing at that rate? You should aim to be able to type around 40 WPM, which works out at between 190 and 200 characters per minute. That's a higher than average score. Anyone who can manage 100 WPM is usually considered very quick at typing as professional typists will manage an average of between 70 and 80 WPM.

Typing Tests

If you're trying to come up with the words while you type, you'll be a lot slower than your potential maximum speed as you try and find the words to complete each sentence and paragraph. The best test to do is to use to the same block of text over and over. Under those conditions, you'll be able to judge your progress. When you get quicker it won't be because the words you were typing contained fewer capital letters or any symbols that involve holding down two keys at once.

Kindergarten

Small kids get used to using devices pretty early but there's a massive difference between using a touchscreen on a tablet and using a keyboard on a computer. Even if your child doesn't know their letters, they can still learn the basics of typing. With the smallest kids, you'll need to get them used to a mouse so look for online typing games that involve mouse and keyboard use. Get them used to computers and keyboard input before putting them in front of a typing game.

First Grade

The next level of games ask the children to find certain letters on the keyboard. There's usually no time limit so your child won't get frustrated but will get a sense of achievement when they find each key. As you'd imagine, the next level for children is the same types of games with time limits. When children are in first grade you can introduce them to the home row keys. These are the keys your fingers rest on when not typing - A, S, D, and F for the left hand and J, K, l, and ; (semicolon) for the right hand.

What Jobs Can You Do?

There are lots of jobs that demand quick typing skills. Receptionists and secretaries have to be able to produce a lot of text quickly. Legal and administrative assistants also need to type quickly. Any data entry position will require this skill but perhaps the most important job that needs this talent is court reporting. A United States registered professional reporter will need to write between 180 and 225 words per minute while maintaining the highest level of accuracy. Thankfully they use a stenotype machine rather than the conventional QWERTY keyboard found on PCs.
